Tracking SDG Progress in Southeast Asia - Advancements in Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Southeast Asian nations are making impressive strides towards SDG 9, fostering resilient infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization, and driving innovation.

 Infrastructure Development:

According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), access to electricity in Southeast Asia increased significantly from 67% in 2000 to 89% in 2018. Moreover, the region has witnessed substantial improvements in access to clean water and transportation infrastructure, with a 17% increase in clean water access from 2000 to 2020 (source: World Bank).

Industrial Growth:

The International Labour Organization (ILO) notes the rise in manufacturing jobs across Southeast Asia, contributing substantially to economic growth and employment. The manufacturing sector, for instance, saw an increase of over 200 million jobs in the region from 2000 to 2020 (source: ILO).

Innovation & Technology:

Southeast Asia is embracing technology as a driver of progress. The World Bank acknowledges the rise of tech startups and digital innovation hubs across the region. For example, the number of internet users in the region grew from 82 million in 2000 to over 400 million in 2020 (source: World Bank).

While these achievements are remarkable, ensuring inclusive access to infrastructure and sustaining growth while minimizing environmental impact remain ongoing challenges.

The collective efforts of governments, private sectors, and NGOs have been instrumental in advancing SDG 9 in Southeast Asia. Continued collaboration and investment in sustainable development initiatives are vital to further progress.

Let's build on these achievements and collaborate for a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable Southeast Asia!
