Analysis of new challenges faced by corporations to implement sustainability

In today's VUCA world—marked by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity—corporate sustainability strategies face increasingly "wicked problems."

These are challenges that defy straightforward solutions, where every action has cascading effects, and where stakeholders' conflicting interests make consensus difficult.

A striking example is climate change. According to the World Economic Forum, 2023 saw over 12,000 extreme weather events, causing $165 billion in damages globally .

This escalating unpredictability demands more than just mitigation—it requires adaptation and resilience-building, embedded in every facet of business strategy.

The complexity doesn't stop at climate. The global economy is undergoing seismic shifts, driven by rapid technological advancements and geopolitical tensions. The International Labour Organization predicts that by 2030, up to 375 million workers may need to switch occupational categories due to automation and AI .

Corporate sustainability must now address not just environmental, but also social issues, such as workforce reskilling and ethical technology deployment. In this VUCA landscape, traditional linear problem-solving methods are insufficient. Companies must adopt systems thinking, fostering innovation, collaboration, and agility.

This isn't just about staying competitive—it's about survival. How is your organization adapting to these wicked problems - are sustainability leaders the new wizards?
